Our team at Making it in Manhattan kicked off a busy season of New York Fashion Week with a sneak peek at the behind-the-scenes happenings at Tadashi Shoji. In true Fashion Week nature, the hustle behind the runway glam was well underway as we sat down with Tadashi Shoji himself to discuss his Autumn/Winter 2020 collection.

His namesake label is known for extravagant yet wearable gowns that celebrate the beauty of the wearer; although, the meaning behind his pieces go far beyond their beautiful surface. “It’s all about how the East has influenced the West throughout time,” says Shoji. The storyline behind the collection recalls the tale of Mongolia, a fabled empire said to be where the East met the West centuries ago.

The storyline was reflected throughout the collection through bold jewel tones like ruby and cobalt, luxe brocade, lace and metallic finishes as well as strong shoulders which lent a powerful feeling to feminine pieces.

When asked about why the team chooses to opt for runway over a presentation or event to showcase upcoming collections, Shoji emphasized the power of storytelling. “It’s the fashion, the beauty, the lights, the music that all come together to tell the story,” says Shoji — and we couldn’t agree more!
