Spring is (hopefully!) upon us here in New York! Along with the warmer weather comes the inevitable question: “what should I wear?” True, it’s a question we face more often than not, but the thing about spring in New York is that it’s three seasons in one. In the morning, it feels like a brisk fall morning. Then around lunch time there’s a heat wave, followed by the 4:00 deep-freeze. It is beyond tempting to pack your winter clothes away at the first hint of sunny and somewhat warm weather, but dressing for spring in the city can be tricky. Here are a few ways you can get a little more wear out of some of your favorite winter pieces, while also dressing as accordingly as possible for the ever-changing spring days!

Instead of pairing your favorite winter sweater dress with a scarf and a chic winter coat, keep your calves warm with some cute printed knee-high boots or opaque tights. Another great way to summon springtime: opting for a headband instead of a hat—let the sun hit your face! Of course, the best accessory for any spring outfit: your iced coffee of choice!

Combat boots came back with a vengeance in 2020 along with a few other (less desirable) trends from the ‘90s. You’ve seen the chunkiest boots paired with everything from leather leggings to shirt dresses and everything in between as of late. Try them on with your favorite distressed band tee and some denim shorts for a relaxed, super ‘90s look. Or wear them with your favorite floral print dress to give a bohemian outfit a little edge!

Everyone loves a good blazer, and they’re suitable for literally every season. The perfect way to wear your favorite blazer during the spring months? Throw it on over your favorite athleisure set for your next coffee run. Add your favorite crossbody bag and a chunky necklace to take your outfit to the next level. Also a sure hit: wearing one with your best white tee, jeans and tennis shoes!

We all have our favorite oversized hoodie—and after last year there’s likely more than one vying for the coveted spot of your *actual* favorite. Ditch the coordinating sweatpants and pair your best (or biggest) sweatshirt with a fun pair of tall boots. Knee-high or over-the-knee, the higher the better! Throw on a pair of bike shorts underneath if you don’t want to go sans pants. If the sweatshirt is big enough, you’ll get the same illusion anyway, but with the added security of knowing you won’t actually flash anyone!

Don’t put the winter trench coat in storage just yet! Since the mornings and evenings still get chilly, sling it over your shoulders with your cutest spring dress or your go-to pantsuit. Classic and chic, it elevates your outfit, while also keeping you warm should the temperature drop—which we know it will!

Turtlenecks are the perfect transitional piece. You can wear them under your favorite slip dress, tee shirt, button-up, printed co-ord set—the list goes on! Plus, they look great with a statement necklace on top. In a neutral color, the possibilities for layering are endless. If you want to wear it solo, pair it with capris to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn!
