Bold eyes are having a moment! This spring trend stems from fashion’s current infatuation with vibrant colors and last year’s rise of maximalist beauty. Who could forget Rihanna’s striking eyeliners, Marc Jacobs’ glam eyeshadows, or the hundreds of glittery, Euphoria-esque looks overtaking Instagram? That same unabashed love of self-expression backs the punchy makeup look.

From pastels to pure mattes, eyes stood out at spring runways like Christian Siriano, Anna Sui, and Nicole Miller—and now they’ve made it to the mainstream. Bold eyes are the perfect way to level up your looks (even if it’s just for Zoom happy hour for now); they’re whimsically expressive, and you can match them to your outfits in a rainbow of tones.

Though it’s of-the-moment, this beauty trend is pure fun and versatile. After all, beauty is a fluid industry that creates tones, textures and trends year-round that look fabulous on anyone. With new spring palettes spreading beauty’s latest obsession, there’s something for everyone to enjoy (and unleash their inner MUA) this season!

Rainbow Brights

One of the biggest trends at New York Fashion Week’s spring shows were multi-colored eyes. Pairing contrasting shades like yellow and blue, green and pink, or a blend of multiple colors create a magical moment that will brighten your day. And if you need further proof? Look no further than the runways at Jeremy Scott, Nicole Miller and Chromat for a literal rainbow of inspiration.

Romantic Watercolors

Watercolors may be soft, but they made a splashy statement this season. Take this springtime trend for a test run with calming colors and faint neutral undertones, like models at Jason Wu and Alice + Olivia’s spring shows. Better yet? Take a cue from watercolor artists like Van Gogh and add as much color as your heart desires!

Major Metallics

Arts and crafts were a fashion trend this year, and that translated to beauty too! Just take a cue from Christian Siriano, where models like Coco Rocha donned dramatic metallic shadows for his spring show. By blending several contrasting or complementary tones, you can create a pearly look that’s perfectly shimmery for springtime.

Perfect Pastels

Nothing says ‘spring’ like pastels, and their foray into beauty is one of the season’s best looks. Tonal pinks and blues were standouts at runways like Iceberg and Elie Tahari, and an incredibly approachable take on the trend. Try a singular hue that complements your favorite warm-weather outfits or layer it with white eyeliner for an edgier effect.

Some Like it Hot

Warm colors are a bold approach to shadows, but nonetheless a trend that’s continued from its orange beginnings a few seasons ago. Multi-hued and bright matte looks were recent go-to’s for celebs like Dove Cameron and Katy Perry, proving that reds, oranges and yellows are one of spring’s hottest looks. Layering similar tones with a sparkly finish is sure to heat up your beauty routine this season.

Oceanic Hues

On the opposite end of the color spectrum, blues, greens and purples are refreshing twists on springtime shadow. Stars like Lucy Hale and Dua Lipa have tried ethereal tones of mint and lavender on the red carpet, and it’s quickly caught on. Lighter tones are the most approachable way to try this and can be enhanced with darker shades in their palettes. Strong shades of blue or green in matte tones are also packed with color, ensuring you’ll stay cool all spring.

Sparkle for Days

The seventies are back, and so are disco-ready beauty looks. Slightly smudged, sparkling hues of green, bronze and maroon are some of spring’s best. Taking the trend further with metallic tones or tonal glitter is perfect for cocktail hours or a night out with your girlfriends. It also adds rockstar glam to a daytime look, if you so choose!

Pretty in Pinks

Rosy and peachy tones blossomed on models at Missoni, Anna Sui, and Tanya Taylor, proving that everyone looks pretty in pink. Layer several hues of the color for an ombre effect, or just one shade for a punky matte look. Finishing with a hint of glitter or gloss will ensure a look that’s dramatically romantic all season!
